A Stage 1 cancer means that the tumor is confined to the cervix. The sub stages are based on size and depth of tumor invasion from the surface to the underlying support tissue in the cervix. Generally, a 1a is a microscopic tumor with minimal invasion. A 1b is bigger and deeper but is still confined to the cervix.
