My 25 year old daughter had a molar pregnancy she had a D&C done and her levels went down steadily down from 100,000 to two weeks ago being 1600, She went back on the birth control pill two weeks ago as she was advised not to get pregnant, As soon as she started the pill her levels started to rise, after two days on the pill by 100 and then after a full week by 600, Did the pill have any affect on these levels? Thank you very much. Marian.
Laurence A. Cole, Ph.D. (Febuary 6, 2006):
It would be extremely unlikely for hCG levels to rise when someone starts taking the oral contraceptive pill after evacuation of a mole. Extremely unlikely because one normally takes the pill to block any production of hCG or hCG-like molecules by the pituitary gland that may interfere with the low baseline hCG levels, being carefully monitored by the physician (for recurrence of mole). One also takes the pill to prevent pregnancy which can confuse the monitoring of the mole. To the best of my knowledge there is no precedence for the pill causing hCG levels to rise. If anything it might cause the reverse.
