The are over 80 different types of HPV. They are placed in 3 groups; low, moderate and high risk types.
Patients with higher risk HPV types are more likely to progress to cervical dysplasia. In each group, higher risk types of HPV are more often seen in invasive cervical cancer. However, predicting the behavior of HPV in an individual patient is impossible at this time. Currently, HPV typing is being used to help manage the abnormal pap smear. Current research is actively looking towards the development of an HPV vaccine.
